PRESS RELEASE
FREE FLOOD DEBRIS DISPOSAL
July 16, 2007

(Bourbon County) The Bourbon County Commission has approved free disposal of flood debris for Bourbon County residents.

Due to the recent flooding in Bourbon County, debris has washed up on Bourbon County land.  The flooding has also affected some homeowners where water damaged personal property in their homes.  The Bourbon County Commission has set up a way for those affected by the flood damage to dispose of their flood debris free of charge.

Any Bourbon County resident who has flood debris in need of disposal should contact the Bourbon County Public Works office at 620-223-3800, between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Friday through July 31, 2007.  The Public Works office will coordinate with residents to dump their flood debris at the Bourbon County landfill free of charge.  Any items dumped will need to be verified as flood debris.

Again, please contact the Public Works office by July 31st to coordinate the disposal of the flood debris.  Any items taken to the landfill without prior coordination with the Public Works office will be refused.

If you have any questions, please contact a Bourbon County commissioner or the Public Works office.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bourbon County neither supports nor does it oppose the Fort Scott Indoor/Outdoor Aquatics Facility, which is the subject of the Special Election to be held Tuesday, June 5, 2007.

It is the policy of Bourbon County not to endorse or oppose any candidate or question submitted at election.
Bourbon County is accepting sealed bids on the following project:  tearing out and relaying the sidewalk which runs parallel to 3rd Street along the south end of the courthouse.  Bids must be marked and sent to the County Clerk, 210 S. National Ave., Fort Scott, KS 66701, by 4:30 pm, Thursday, May 31, 2007, and will be opened at 10:00 am, Friday, June 1, 2007.  Bourbon County reserves the right to refuse any and all bids.
On Thursday, May 17, 2007, the south parking lot of the Bourbon County Courthouse will be closed off for workers to repair a sewer line.  Parking will be limited and the only working restrooms will be in the lobby of the Correctional Center on the north end of the building.

This job should only take a day or two, but we apologize for the inconvenience.
City of Fort Scott
Spring Clean-Up Program

The City of Fort Scott will be providing a "Spring Clean-up Program" during the month of May.  The City will be conducting a one time only pick-up program.  City crews will begin in the south end of Fort Scott and work their way north.  Once they have gone through a certain section of Fort Scott they will not return for additional pick ups.

Residents south of 6th Street should put their discarded items at the curb beginning Wednesday, May 2nd through Sunday, May 6th.  No items should be placed at the curb after May 6th.  City crews will then begin pick up on May 7th.

Residents north of 6th Street should put their discarded items at the curb beginning Wednesday, May 9th through Sunday, May 13th.  No items should be placed at the curb after May 13th.  City crews will then begin pick up on May 14th.

The following items will NOT be accepted:  whole trees, tree trunks or limbs over 8-inches in diameter, household trash, tires, batteries, commercial construction materials, hazardous chemicals, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and paint containers.

News Release
Approaching Personal Property Deadline

Judy Orton, Bourbon County Appraiser, reminds personal property owners and commercial personal property owners that their assessment forms are due in the office by Thursday, March 15th.  Rendition forms were sent out earlier this year.  Anyone with trucks running over a 12M tag, boats, mobile homes, or golf carts are required to report these to our office, or a penalty will be applied.  Commercial personal property owners should provide a copy of their depreciation schedule or a complete listing of all machinery and equipment used in their business.  If an extension is needed, a written request needs to be filed before the March 15th deadline.
Due to a significant and potentially dangerous winter weather event to enter the Bourbon County area starting Friday afternoon (1/12/07) and extending through late Sunday night, Bourbon County Emergency Management requests that area residents do all shopping and take care of any other essential business on Friday limiting non-essential travel over the weekend.  Be advised that with any winter ice event there is a possibility of widespread power outages in the area and we ask that you take this into consideration for your family's safety.  There is a potential for significant snow...sleet...or ice accumulations that may impact streets and highways limiting your ability to control your vehicle.  Again we ask that you please limit travel as much as possible for your own safety as well as the safety of other area residents.  Continue to monitor the latest forecasts.  State tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, television or radio stations for later statements concerning this potentially dangerous winter weather event.
